The Vancouver Giants’ latest specialty jersey is a referee’s uniform, and team vice-president of operations, Pete Toigo, hopes that it has staying power.

Toigo says that the goal with putting the Giants in the black and white stripes for an Referee Appreciation Night game against the Spokane Chiefs on Oct. 22 at the Langley Events Centre is to “celebrate the job that referees and linesmen do in hockey and raise awareness about the needs for officials in your minor associations.” And he said he’d like it to become an annual event for his team.

“I hope this really evolves into something for us,” he said.

Toigo has children in minor baseball. He’s heard the past few years about how difficult it is to find referees, umpires and the like. He’s front and centre in these nights for the Giants.

The Giants have developed a special uniform that the referees and linesmen will wear that Oct. 22. They’ll reveal them in the coming days. They are also pledging to have a referees’ hotstove in the banquet hall at the LEC that night. Participants in the panel will be announced at a later date.

All player jerseys will be auctioned off online in the days leading up to the game.

Here’s some of the other Giants’ specialty jerseys from over the years.
